The Numbers Game
2009-11-18 15:16The CEE Rugby Cup Group Phase reaches its conclusion in the next two weeks with two final fixtures of Pool A and Pool B. The last games feature Dragon Brno playing Bulldogok and Vitézek hosting Donau Wien.
The first places are already decided in both groups and shared between two unbeaten teams from Romania. Newcomers Baia Mare took Group A and defending champions Timisoara won Group B comfortably. It is also certain, that neither Bulldogok in Group A, nor Arad in Group B can finish last in their respective pools.
Bulldogok travel to Brno on 21st November in a great position. A win or even a draw would guarantee them 2nd place in their group and therefore a more favourable draw for the play-offs. Dragon Brno can also make second place with a win of their own but a draw would result in them finishing 3rd. Theoretically, Dragon could finish third even with a loss, but they would have to collect both the try and the defeat bonus, which means that they would have to score at least 4 tries and stay within 7 points of Bulldogok, however, this is a highly unlikely scenario given the fact that Brno have only managed 1 try so far in their previous two games this season. Ricany have already played all their games in the group, but can still stay 3rd if Bulldogok win and Dragon only collect one bonus point, at the most.
The situation in Pool B is somewhat similar to that of the other group as Vitézek can reach second place with a win or a draw, however, they can also sneak into second with a high-scoring close loss, collecting 2 bonus points. Donau Wien, a team who are still looking for their first win in the CEE Rugby Cup over two seasons will have to defy all odds to finish 3rd as even an away victory on 28th November might not be enough for them. If Donau collect the try bonus, they will still need Vitézek to be limited to maximum one bonus point, if the Austrians do not manage the bonus, they need to make sure Vitézek score at least 8 points less than they do to finish 3rd. In these cases, Vitézek would finish bottom of Pool B. Arad will be hoping for a Donau victory as that presents them with the only chance of finishing second and being drawn against a lower seeded team from the other pool.
According to CEE Rugby rules the draw for the quarter finals will be as follows:
Quarter-Final 1: runner-up of Pool A v. 3rd of Pool B
Quarter-Final 2: runner-up of Pool B v. 3rd of Pool A
Quarter-Final 3: winner of Pool A (BAM) v. 4th of Pool B
Quarter-Final 4: winner of Pool B (TIM) v. 4th of Pool A
The venue of the quarter finals will be at the lower ranked team on the basis of Pool rankings in each tie.
