Champions shine in home win
2009-09-28 10:27It was last year’s top against bottom as RCM Timisoara entertained Donau Wien in sunny Romania in a highly enjoyable 43-0 victory.
Donau Wien arrived for their second CEE Rugby Cup game only 6 days after their home opener against Arad, where they scored 11 points to kick off their campaign on a high. Timisoara, on the other hand, came into their first game with a point to prove as a new, potentially more powerful team, Baia Mare, came into the CEE Rugby Cup to pose a great threat to their successful title defence.
The match kicked off in front of a friendly group of fans, who created an amazing atmosphere, cheering for all good rugby, regardless of teams. The difference between the two teams was clear from the very first minute, but the Austrians refused to throw in the towel and kept the difference down to 5 points for the first 25 minutes. The Romanians started to exert their will on their opponents finishing the half strongly to pull away 24-0.
The most exciting moment of the first half occurred in the 20th minute, when Donau intercepted a pass and ran it almost the full length of the pitch for a try only to be denied by a knock-on just before the long run. Throughout the game Donau put in a spirited performance, winning rucks and mauls time and time again, however luck just was not on their side on this day and they ended up with no points on the board. Timisoara wrapped up the win and the bonus point in the second half and did their young coach proud by executing a “double miss” technique flawlessly several times in the game. Timisoara ran out clear winners to show all the new pretenders that they will not give up the CEE Rugby Cup title without a fight.
The Champions started their campaign with a morale-boosting win and will travel to Esztergom to face Vitézek next week, who are coming off a disappointing domestic season. Donau will also face Vitézek next in the last game of the group stage, where they will be hoping of an amazing upset.
